Paratextual Thresholds in Hisham Matar’s Disappearance

Abstract

This study examines the paratextual thresholds in Hisham Matar’s Libyan novel Ikhtifā’ (Disappearance) as accompanying elements that shape meaning and guide reader reception. It analyzes the title, preface, cover, and selected textual epigraphs/excerpts as initial entry points that construct the horizon of expectation and outline the text’s semantic scope. The study argues that Matar deploys these thresholds with clear artistic intent: the title serves as an interpretive gateway, raising questions about “disappearance” and its personal, political, and cultural implications. The preface and the ordering of chapters foreground the novel’s subjective and affective dimensions, particularly experiences of loss and longing. The cover’s design and color palette reinforce an atmosphere of gloom and ambiguity, while also varying across editions. The study concludes that these paratexts extend the narrative architecture and demonstrate how formal design supports content and prepares the text for reception.
