Abstract

The term "غير" (other than) has been presented in the context of linguistic research, like other words, taking on various forms and aspects that vary in terms of prevalence and extension based on a sample survey of Arabic texts. The main objective of this research is to examine it within the context of its usage, specifically when it is in the context of negation. The term "غير" is always a singular masculine word, inherently connected to the additional element in meaning. It is permissible to omit it if its meaning is understood. For example, in the phrase "قبضت عشرة ليس غيرها" (She received ten, not more), "غير" can be omitted because its meaning is clear. In linguistic terms, "غير" can be omitted either by raising the deletion of the information or by implying the noun, as in the example "لله الأمر من قبل ومن بعد" (To Allah belongs the command before and after). Some read it with a kasrah without tanween, i.e., "من قبل الغلب ومن بعده." It is essential to note that "غير" can be challenging to define precisely due to its inherent ambiguity. This characteristic is shared with its counterparts, such as "مثل" (like), "وشبه" (and similar), and "وشبيه" (and resembling).
