The Contributions of Libyan Scholars to Rhetorical Studies: Al-Sinawuni and His Methodology in Manḥ al-Fattāḥ

Abstract

This study aims to introduce the book Manḥ al-Fattāḥ fī Fatḥ Abwāb Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ by the Libyan scholar Ḥasan ibn ʿUmar al-Sināwunī, a commentary on Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ by al-Khaṭīb al-Qazwīnī, and to examine the author’s methodological approach and the book’s scholarly value in Arabic rhetoric. The significance of the study lies in highlighting an important aspect of Libyan intellectual heritage and the contributions of its scholars to Arabic and Islamic knowledge. The findings show that al-Sināwunī was a distinguished scholar who combined teaching and judicial responsibilities and held prominent scholarly positions, ultimately serving as imam of the Great Mosque of Zaytuna. The study also demonstrates that his approach went beyond merely transmitting and explaining earlier texts, incorporating discussion, comparison, critical commentary, reasoning, objection, and evaluation. This reflects his scholarly independence and critical engagement with rhetorical issues. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for greater attention to Libyan scholarly heritage through the critical editing and study of its texts, given their significant contribution to Arabic intellectual history.
